Vulcan
![[Vulcan]](images/vulcan1.jpg) Vulcan is associated with two distinct Colorado mining operations—one in Gunnison County and another in Garfield County. At the site of the Garfield County mining operation today, there remains an active underground coal fire that was lit in an explosion at the mine on February 18, 1896, killing 49 miners. Subsequent explosions killed 40 more miners. Protests and myriad other problems shut down the Garfield County Vulcan mine in 1918 and that site is not covered on the Haunted at Timberline Web site. Vulcan in Gunnison County was active from 1893 to 1919. The sign in the photo above was created by someone who only recently was living in one of the remaining buildings. Vulcan sits at approximately the same altitude as nearby Gunnison (7,700 feet) and hosts one of the few remaining intact chimney mines in Colorado (shown in the video below and visible at the top left, behind the sign, in the photo above). |
