About IndependenceLike Ashcroft, Independence has been restored and is maintained by the Aspen Historical Society. Independence is situated directly below Independence Pass; many miners stopped at Independence as they made the trek across Mosquito Pass and Independence Pass on their way to Aspen. However, the mines were productive only from 1880 to 1888. In 1888, just 100 citizens remained compared to the more than 500 when the town first boomed in 1881. ![]() ![]() |
