About Engineer PassEngineer Pass is the scenic highlight of the Alpine Loop that connects Lake City, Silverton, and Ouray. The pass is high above timberline at 12,800 feet. During the mining heydey in this area (at the end of the 19th Century), the pass was used primarily by miners traveling between mining camps. It sits atop the Continental Divide and is situated on the rim of two extinct volcanic calderas. The photos below were taken at Mineral Point, just a mile down the west side of the pass. ![]() ![]() |
